New Bridge Lumenus KS5

Theatre is a mirror, a sharp reflection of society. It's where we confront our truths, challenge our beliefs, and ultimately find our humanity laid bare on the stage.

August Wilson

Curriculum Vision

The Lumenus Pathway at the College is the for students who wish to develop their Performing Arts Skills through BTEC level 1 and 2 qualifications with a view to either continue to further study and professional practice or use the transferable skills to move onto Future Finders or alternative apprenticeships in the region.

We aim to create a variety of performances and experiences which develop the very best understanding of performing arts in all its forms and craft from the actors, dances, singers, musicians and production teams.

We aim to challenge students to think, act and speak like those working in the field would by:

▪ Offering a variety of different performance opportunities each year which are inclusive and accessible, regardless of starting-point artistic abilities

▪ Creating working, rehearsal and performance environments which allow students to develop a true understanding of the challenges and expectations of the industry

▪ Offering the opportunity for students to develop skills beyond those of performing on stage

▪ Developing all students’ self-confidence and esteem and resilience regardless of where their starting point may be

▪ Developing experience of theatrical etiquette in attendance of a variety of professional performances and theatrical workshops

Lumenus lessons at New Bridge College

Curriculum delivery consists of skills workshops, performance, accredited learning, appropriate work experience and working alongside professional artists and companies.

Over the course of each year, students will take part in several theatre projects and performance opportunities including:

• Christmas production

• Easter Showbacks

• Salford Dance Explosion

• Summer Production

• Palace Theatre Schools’ Partnership

• Oldham Theatre Workshop Creative Partnership workshops

Each week, Lumenus students access Oldham Theatre Workshop on their pathway days. In addition to providing experience of working within a professional rehearsal environment, the space enables whole group, small group and individual tasked based learning which are focused on developing:

▪ Workshop Skills: The students work with workshop leaders from arts organisations to develop their workshop skills and deliver workshops

▪ Devising: Students create a performance form a given a stimulus using and developing skills learnt in workshops.

▪ Script work – We read through the script, adapting it, and learning it throughout rehearsals

▪ Auditions – Students will learn a section of script and/or dance and song

▪ Rehearsals - The rehearsal periods are tough and demanding. Students will work individually, with partners and as a whole ensemble. We will work with students from the rest of New Bridge for certain productions.

▪ Performance – Students get the opportunity to perform throughout the year. All students have Showbie accounts for staff to set and appraise work. It also allows students to self and peer assess.

Student Voice

I have really enjoyed being in Lumenus, learning new skills and performing in shows. It has helped me with my confidence and helped me get better at expressing myself. I am joining Future Finders as I want to get a job and be independent.

Grace

Throughout my Lumenus journey, I have increased in confidence and developed my skills in Performing Arts. I hope to continue my journey with Global Grooves as an assistant dance leader.
