Employability KS4
We may not be able to offer long-term employment, but we should try to offer long-term employability.
Brian Corby
Employability is:
“a set of achievements – skills, understandings and personal attributes – that makes students more likely to gain employment and be successful in their chosen occupations, which benefits themselves, the workforce, the community and the economy.”
The primary purpose of this curriculum is to recognise the development of employability skills and/knowledge.
Curriculum Vision
At New Bridge, we aim to deliver a holistic and engaging curriculum that places equal emphasis on building self-esteem, confidence, resilience and a sense of wellbeing, as well as developing the necessary skills and attributes needed to succeed in the modern world.
It is our aim to deliver an employability curriculum that prepares learners for the richness of a full and independent life as young adults.
We are passionate about our young people being given the opportunity to reach their full potential and transition confidently from education into employment.
To achieve this, we focus on positive social and communication skills, identifying appropriate support networks, action planning and providing supported opportunities to put into practice what they have learned in the classroom through work experience opportunities.
Employability at Pathways
Employability at New Bridge are engaging and enjoyable, a variety of planned resources are used to aid the learners to develop a positive approach to the subject. Lessons are differentiated to ensure there is appropriate challenge for all learners.
Pupils will take part in identified Employability sessions.
Lessons will be delivered in small groups, approximately between 3-10, to provide opportunities to develop the necessary workplace skills being taught, such as teamwork and appropriate communication.
Within these small groups, teachers/tutors are nurturing, empathetic and empowering and encourage learners to communicate their needs in a safe and supportive environment.
Subject teaching that is rich in real world examples, research projects and opportunities to see how the subject and its methods are applied. As our young people develop their independence and confidence, there will be opportunities for learners to show their skills through planned community engagement activities.
There will be opportunities for mock interviews in to enable learners to effectively prepare for employment interviews. Students will have the opportunity to work with several outside agencies and guest speakers to support this curriculum and provide independent careers advice and guidance.
Meaningful workplace encounters will take place across the local community, again adding another level of richness of the curriculum.
