The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.

Curriculum Vision
At New Bridge College, English engages students in the fundamentals of reading, writing and speaking and listening, giving them opportunities to communicate their ideas and emotions to others.
The students, and their voices, are at the heart of everything we do and their engagement with, and enjoyment of, English is paramount to the design of the curriculum.
We adopt a project-based-learning approach and cover a range of topics that are selected by the students each year in order to give them the chance to develop culturally, socially and emotionally.
These topics link closely with those that the students cover in their PSHE lessons to promote their overall holistic development and give them the opportunity to work towards the outcomes on their Education Health and Care Plans.
We aim to develop creativity whilst equipping each student with the tools to express themselves appropriately and confidently.
English Lessons at New Bridge School
Students have three hours of English a week, delivered in two 1.5 hour blocks. Most students work towards a Functional Skills English qualification from Entry Level 1-Level 2.
For students for whom the Functional Skills qualification isn’t appropriate, we also offer NOCN portfolio-based stepping stone qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 2.
These qualifications are designed for students who require additional support to bridge the gap between levels, with the pressure of exams removed to enable them to build confidence.
Students are assessed regularly and are provided with detailed feedback to ensure they make excellent progress. They are given frequent opportunities to reflect on their progress, and they play a key role in the target setting process following assessments to encourage them to take onus for their learning.
