Learning for Life KS3

Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.
                                                                             (Benjamin Franklin)

Curriculum Vision

Every student at New Bridge has a personalised plan called an Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP), which lays out specific goals connected to future aspirations, which we refer to in school as Destinations.

During Learning for Life lessons, teachers establish smaller goals, which we refer to as small step targets, to help students steadily work towards achieving their EHCP outcomes set during their annual reviews.

Learning for Life at New Bridge strives to guarantee that all students no matter the Destination pathway they are on, achieve their individual educational goals related to the four areas of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) outlined in their EHCPs.

  • Cognition and Learning
  • Communication and Interaction
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health
  • Sensory and/or Physical

Learning for Life Lessons at New Bridge School

Students have Learning for Life lessons each week, which are taught by their form tutor.  Learning for Life covers the following areas of the EHCP outcomes:

Cognition & Learning

The EHCP small step targets are mainly addressed within the broader curriculum, including Core and Enrichment subjects. However, Learning for Life classes may include personalised interventions to support progress in specific areas like Maths and English.

Communication & Interaction

Learning for Life focuses on developing communication skills in various areas such as expressive and receptive language, using verbal or non-verbal communication and social communication skills. Students are encouraged to develop their functional language skills to enhance independence and achieve their goals. Many students follow personalised Speech and Language Therapy (SaLT) programs and targets, when provided by the SaLT team. Alongside this, school support a total communication environment, in which students are encouraged to use a variety of communication styles.

Social, Emotional & Mental Health

Learning for Life supports students with social, emotional, and mental health issues, such as anxiety and low mood, decision-making difficulties and behavioural challenges. We support students to try practical strategies to manage these difficulties, and work on becoming more independent. Learning for Life lessons provide a safe environment for practicing new skills before applying them in the wider school and community.

Sensory & Physical Difficulties

Educational, Health, Care Plan's identify students sensory needs; hearing loss, visual impairments, sensory processing, and/or physical difficulties. The aim of Learning for Life lessons in this area, are to reduce or remove barriers to learning caused by sensory and physical difficulties. For example, students may use specialised equipment such as standing frames, carry out advised physiotherapy programs, or access sensory equipment for regulation. These lessons may also focus on developing motor skills to enhance engagement in other subjects.

Happy, I feel happy doing this.
