New Bridge Community Living -KS4
Curriculum Vision
The intent of the Community Living pathway is to provide a bespoke curriculum for pupils whose destination as an adult will be to live and work either independently or with some support within their local community. Our aim is that pupils will develop a whole range of transferable skills which will allow some to succeed in employability where appropriate and enable all to lead full and enriched lives.
The intention of the curriculum is that it builds on knowledge and skills acquired in Key Stage 3 with an emphasis on the functional and practical application of these in a variety of settings. This will develop pupils who are confident, positive individuals with an enquiring approach to new possibilities and a strong sense of self and their connection to the people and places which surround them. The curriculum will support them to develop good self-esteem and to stretch and challenge them to be as independent as possible in managing their own lives. It teaches them how to make decisions for themselves, to problem solve and to advocate for their wants and needs as they move into adulthood.
Community Living at New Bridge Pathways
Pupils are taught by their form tutor who is a specialist in the Pathway area. They have a seven periods of this pathway per week which are delivered in the tutor group. Work is highly differentiated, and teachers use a split model approach to teaching supported by teaching assistants.
Teachers employ a wide range of teaching strategies to implement the curriculum which is bespoke to the needs and level of ability of the pupils. These include:
- A combination of individual, small group, whole group and whole school teaching experiences to promote independent and collaborative work skills.
- New ideas and concepts are introduced through research, role play, written exercises, practical experience and activities.
- Opportunities to re-visit and consolidate learning using a small step approach to target setting and progress.
- Discussion, debate and technology supported activities using Apps and augmented reality.
- Educational visit activities in relevant community settings to extend and practice classroom-based learning.
The delivery team will nurture pupils, sensitively supporting them on an individual basis to achieve their full potential. All our Community Learning pupils will focus on core themes such as community action, healthy lifestyles and living, personal safety and developing self. However, a Community Living strand can be selected to enable pupils to explore and specifically study/participate in an area of interest
Impact
Pupils are assessed using New Bridge Assessment system Dashboard. There is also an option to complete an ASDAN accreditation for Personal Development and Progress.

I enjoy being able to try new things within my pathway lessons. I get to try a range of sports every week, experience different leisure activities and go on trips away from the school building. It is fun!

We have been learning about ways to relax and make the most of leisure time. I enjoy reading.
