New Bridge Lumenus - KS4
Curriculum Vision
At New Bridge we believe that a high-quality education in Performing Arts will offer real world experiences for those who demonstrate a propensity to study beyond Key Stage 3. The Lumenus Pathway gives those pupils a vehicle in the form of a theatre company to experience working with arts professionals and performing in local theatres. The curriculum is designed to increase self-esteem, confidence and creativity through enhanced interpersonal skills.
The work enables the pupils to explore the world through theatre arts and begin to understand their place within it. We believe in a holistic approach and great emphasis is placed upon wellbeing and learning techniques to manage feelings and develop resilience to cope with the many challenges life may present. Pupils have the opportunity to gain accreditation in Arts Awards as well as Entry Level qualifications in performing arts.
Lumenus Lessons at Pathways
Pupils take sessions developing the following skills:
- Workshop Skills - The students work with arts professionals and Lumenus staff to develop their workshop skills, practicing and experimenting with a variety of techniques. Where appropriate, students will deliver some workshops. This allows pupils to demonstrate their mastery of skills and experience teaching the subject themselves.
- Devising – Working with the Nation Youth Theatre the students are given the opportunity to develop their creative skills and learn techniques to create new pieces of Theatre.
- Choreography – Students will learn basic choreographic techniques to compose dances. Each year all students will be given the opportunity to perform at the Salford Dance Festival at the Lowry.
- Rehearsing - All pupils are involved in rehearsals where ambitious standards are expected. As well as honing their skills, this is an exercise in developing communication skills and resilience.
- Performance - Pupils demonstrate the skills they have acquired. Performances take place throughout the year. They take place at various venues from the Pathways Lumenus studio to The Lowry Lyric Theatre.
- Responding: - Students use iPads to record the process and encourage self-reflection and peer assessment.
The use of Oldham Theatre Workshop’s professional rehearsal space, the access to theatrical organisations, and the involvement of theatrical professionals ensures pupils on the Pathway are part of a dynamic and authentic performing arts curriculum.
