World Book Day Celebrations at NBC!

This week, the college was abuzz as we held our annual World Book Day celebrations. In keeping with our Roald Dahl theme, the main corridor was decorated with famous quotes and book covers by the beloved author.

The students took part in form time activities, such as guessing who “The Masked Reader” was, and a Roald Dahl themed Kahoot! Throughout the day, the celebrations continued with a book cover hunt around the college at lunch time, a “Drop Everything and Read” session and, of course, a slice of WBD themed cake.

Staff and students also took the fancy dress competition very seriously (some more than others in the Lumenus department!).

College WBD 2025

The whole day was wonderful from start to finish, and the enthusiasm of both students and staff demonstrates how much value is placed on reading at NBC. For many of our students, the college is the last stop on their educational journey before they venture into the world of employment; it is therefore vital that they understand the importance of being lifelong readers outside of, and beyond, their time here.

As we remind the students, there is so much magic to be found in the pages of a book and, in the famous words of Roald Dahl, “those who don’t believe in magic will never find it”

A huge thank you to all staff who helped to bring this amazing day together.

Tackling Food Waste: Lina Valencia’s Visit to New Bridge College

New Bridge College recently had the pleasure of hosting Lina Valencia from Local Food First, an organisation dedicated to promoting sustainable food practices. Lina’s visit was part of an initiative to tackle food waste in Greater Manchester, aiming to educate and empower students to make a real difference in their daily lives.

During her session, Lina spoke about the pressing issue of food waste and its environmental consequences. She explained how excessive waste contributes to climate change, increases landfill overflow, and wastes valuable resources like water and energy. Additionally, she discussed the importance of reducing unnecessary packaging and adopting smarter recycling habits to create a more sustainable food system.

A key point Lina emphasized was the hidden cost of littering. Many people don’t realize that dealing with litter—especially plastic waste—places a financial burden on local councils, businesses, and taxpayers. She highlighted how reducing waste at the source, rather than relying solely on cleanup efforts, is a more effective and sustainable approach.

To further illustrate the impact of plastic pollution, Lina showed a powerful video that depicted the devastating effects of plastic waste on marine life and ecosystems. This sparked meaningful discussions among students about their role in combating pollution and why young people have a unique opportunity to drive change. Lina encouraged everyone to take small but meaningful actions, such as choosing reusable alternatives, supporting local food initiatives, and spreading awareness within their communities.

The session wasn’t just about learning—it was about doing. Students took part in engaging group activities, including interactive discussions and mind-mapping exercises. These activities allowed them to brainstorm practical solutions to reduce waste in their own school and homes. By working together, they explored creative ways to minimize food waste, improve recycling habits, and make a lasting impact.

Lina’s visit was both inspiring and educational, leaving students with a renewed sense of responsibility and a clear understanding of how their choices affect the environment. Her message was simple but powerful: change starts with small steps, and everyone has a role to play in creating a more sustainable future.

4 students had a Dragon’s Den pitch to panel interview live on teams on Thursday in preparation for their upcoming Dragon’s Den event at Trafford College in two weeks. The panel said their presentation was balanced and had a great message, all students had a good voice, and one judge said he hadn't seen a product transformed into the brand name in all the time he had been judging.

The panel gave us a few recommendations for the next stage and the students are now implementing them into their presentation. The directors of the hope company have had a final board meeting to write up their business report which will be submitted along with the presentation to aid their Pitch. The finance team have been collating financial results, and the team have made a net profit of just under £1000.

International Women's Day

This week in college we have celebrated International Women’s Day under the theme, “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment”.

Throughout the week students have created a display board with images of female members of staff. Students then wrote little messages on sticky notes for a member/member of staff of their choice.

On Friday students put a name to a quote and delivered the quotes to each female member of staff with a chocolate treat.

eSports

New Bridge Barkers V The Dukes

Great team effort from the Barker this week, well done all. We didn’t get the win. However, all three games were extremely close with only one goal between the Barkers and Dukes each game.

Next week, we go again!
