Learning Centre Blog (13.9.24)

It has been another busy week at the Learning Centre with students settling in fairly quickly to college life. I’ve been pleased to see how well our students are adapting to new classes/ rooms / staff and lessons.

We are continuing to develop the Learning Centre curriculum offer and this year, we’ve introduced ‘Creative arts’ onto everyone’s timetable.

For anyone who knows me understands my love for all things ‘Creative’ whether it be music, drama, visual arts or dance. It's these things which enrich our lives and its something that can be embraced by everyone of our students.

I love the Einstein quote below.

In addition to enriching life and bringing fun , the arts also provide the opportunity for developing a range of different skills.

I’m delighted to announce that this week, Rebecca from Act one theatre school has joined the teaching team for a day a week and is delivering sessions as part of our creative arts program.

I’d like to take this opportunity of welcoming Rebecca & I look forward to sharing what students have been creating!

Hi, I'm Rebecca. I am a freelance Performing Arts tutor, leading workshops in dance, drama and singing. I own a theatre and circus school in Oldham. I've led lots of workshops for the education department of Oldham Coliseum Theatre and I'm also a previous Head of Performing Arts in mainstream secondary education but specialised in SEND Performing Arts provision for my MA.

I feel so privileged to have be invited, by Miss Allison and Mr Barker, to lead the dance & drama in the new weekly Creative Arts workshops with the students at Newbridge Learning Centre.

Today, I was welcomed so warmly by all the staff and students; what a positive place to work and learn! I met three different classes, and will be meeting many more over the course of the year! Each class worked on dance and movement skills, utilising and harnessing our own individual abilities. Some pupils worked on proprioception by using props such as our stretchy team-dance bands and ribbons - looking at how we can use our strength and space, others learnt new choreography in a chair dance that used curve, scoop & balance moves and other pupils enjoyed the sensory experience of colourful scarves, tactile touch and fun singing.  It was wonderful to watch even the most reticent of 'dancers' give something a go! We all had lots of fun! I can't wait to see how this project evolves!"
