Carers Information
The Learning Centre Parents Group invited Dawn Smith to talk to the group.
Dawn is the Carers Link Officer for Oldham but also has a great deal of relevant experience within Social Care.
The meeting was well attended with a number of parents attending the meeting. Dawn introduced herself and her role.
A key part of this was Dawn introducing the Carers Assessment that she is part of a team providing to carers of adults with special needs
POINT and Children's Services provides a similar offer of a Carers Assessment for carers of children under 18.
As soon as your child turns 18 you can be referred for a Carers Assessment and you are entitled to a reassessment every 12 months.
The assessment can take about an hour and is designed to explore how your wellbeing is affected by being an unpaid carer. It is there to complement the support you are getting, not to take anything away. The Assessment is confidential and usually takes place over the phone.
